The THD UniValve Rackmounted Guitar Amplifier Head is a single-ended class A amplifier head with a single output tube that can be switched at will among many octal-based power tubes, including 6L6, EL34, 6550, KT90, KT88, KT77 and KT66, for different tones without re-biasing the amp. Likewise, the two preamp tubes can be any combination of 12AX7, 12AT7, 12AU7, 12AY7 or 12AZ7. The UniValve delivers tones from smooth and clear to very aggressive overdrive. It is quite small and light, yet easily capable of driving a 4 x 12" cabinet. It has a built-in hot plate power attenuator that allows for full output distortion at almost any volume. And it doesn't cost as much as you might think. What is a Class A? Class A is a term given to an amp that runs its tubes at full current all the time, unlike most tube amps that alternate between running one set of tubes and the other set, each for one half of the wave. The set not in use is turned off by a positive swing of the grid voltage. Single-ended output stages always operate in Class A. Most push-pull amplifiers, including the venerated Vox AC-30 operate in Class AB when overdriven, even if they are in Class A while clean. The upshot is that Class A operation has its own unique tone characteristics that set it apart from other tube amp classes. Class A amps sound great at low volumes, and even better as you turn them up. Thus, with the relatively low wattage of the UniValve you can turn up the amplifier to take full advantage of its stunning output distortion tone without deafening anyone. Why the self-biasing feature? The UniValve's circuitry senses the current needs of the output tube and provides the correct bias volt-age to the cathode of the output tube regardless of tube type or wear. This means that, without any trip to an amp technician, you can simply replace the output tube with one that has different sound characteristics. (Of course, you can also change the preamp tubes at will for even more tonal varia

The THD Flexi-50 Rack-mounted Guitar Amp Head is a precision hand-built 50-watt Class-AB amplifier with foot-switchable overdrive/boost, foot-switchable master volume control and the ability to use almost any preamp and power tubes in any combination, including 6L6, EL34, 6V6, 6CA7, 8417, 6550, KT66, KT77, KT88, KT90, KT100, EL84 (with Yellow Jacket adaptor), 6K6, 6F6, 12AX7, 12AY7, 12AU7, 12AT7, 12AZ7, 12DW7, 12BH7, ECC83, ECC82, ECC81 and many more, giving the user a huge pallet of available sounds simply by changing tubes. The amplifier has a fat, clear, full clean sound reminiscent of late 1950s to early 1960s American combos, and overdrive to rival the best British heads. Even at the highest overdrive settings, the amp still demonstrates dramatic touch sensitivity, cleaning up very well when the volume on the guitar is reduced. Additional features include external bias test points and individual bias controls, permitting the user to quickly and accurately set the output tube bias with any digital voltmeter. The dual bias controls permit the user to correctly bias even mismatched tubes, eliminating the need for matched power tubes. What does all of this mean for you, the player? It could very well mean that the search for your sound is finally over. While UniValve and BiValve-30 amplifiers offer the same flexibility and choice of tubes, they do so in a Class-A circuit. While Class-A amplifiers do have a strong following due to their smooth, even character, there are many players who need, or even crave the immediacy, clarity and "punch" of a grid-biased Class-AB amplifier. The 40 year long love affair that guitarists have had with the now almost clich‚ 50 watt rock and roll amplifier head is proof of this.In the Flexi-50, THD has brought together an ideal combination of simplicity and flexibility, hence the name "Flexi-50". Why strive for simplicity? Robust design and construction are among the reasons. Ease of use is another prime reason

Like the UniValve, the THD BiValve Rack-mounted Guitar Amp Head is a single-ended pure Class A design. However, it has two output valves that are wired in parallel and combined through a special output transformer to deliver up to around 30 watts. You can use almost any output valve you like without touching any kind of bias adjustment, and get this: in the BiValve you can use them in any combination as well. Combined with the capability to take almost any preamp valve, this makes the BiValve even more of an amp-tweaker's dream than its predecessor. Because there's such a wide range of tone available, you create your own style. The BiValve Rack mount amplifier head sits in the same compact pressed steel chassis as the UniValve and, except for the extra valve and control plate, it looks almost identical. Glasgow artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh inspired the UniValve's acid-etched control plate; this time round THD have gone for a marine theme, with an intricate diamond scale design. The control markings are screen printed, which makes them easier to see.Underneath the perforated steel lid there's a larger pair of transformers to handle the increased output, and inside there are two ultra-thick PCBs: one for the power supply and one for the audio. The four valve bases are bolted to the chassis and secured by locking nuts, with hi-fi style internal baffle plates to cut down on radiated hum. The standard of construction is absolutely top class. THD are based in Seattle, which is also hometown to Boeing, and most of the BiValve's heavy fabrication work is contracted out to local specialist companies who service the aircraft industry. The front panel looks deceptively simple. Working from the left, there's a pair of input jacks labeled "more" and "less", followed by a treble cut switch then rotary controls for volume, treble, bass and what THD call "Attitude". It's not a fancy name for a presence control - there'
